Small Group Projects
What can the Small Groups Development project do for your community group?

We can ensure that small groups can access sources of advice, support and funding. We can enable new and existing groups to adopt efficient and effective ways of working. We can also help your organisation to understand and implement good practice in all aspects of your work.

The advice and support that we give can cover areas such as:

  • hands-on help with setting up your group
  • development of fund-raising plans
  • charity registration
  • constitutions
  • filling in funding applications (we have computer programs to identify potential funders)
  • access to our information resources

All our help, support and advice is free.

We support registered charities, voluntary organisations, community and small groups with no more than two full-time paid staff. This can include youth, arts, sports, self-help, tenants and service user groups, as well as individuals who are trying to find a relevant group or are working to set up a new local voluntary or community group.

Services can be brought to your group at your regular meeting place or office.

Development Toolkit for Small Voluntary Organisation

Most voluntary and community groups are set up by local people, who have identified a need for a particular activity or service in their area and want to do something about it.

Starting a group means working together with people who share similar concerns and are aiming to solve a particular problem or meet a certain need.

Setting up a group can be very rewarding, especially as it begins to take shape and develop. However, it is important to remember that the work involved takes lots of time and commitment and often lots of patience. You will encounter problems and setbacks at times and so it is important that those of you involved can work through any difficult times together. Developing a successful group is hard work but as you see your work and group having a positive impact the rewards are tremendous.

This pack is designed to help you through the process of setting up a group, in particular to ensure you are aware of all the responsibilities involved. It will tell you where you can get additional help and support with various things relating to running a small voluntary or community group.
